The Icelanders rejected the anno Domini derived from their friend Bede of Northumbria, and the new conventions were introduced simultaneously in both Icelandic bishoprics. Already from the end of the twelfth century we have preserved in Iceland a computus based on the solar cycle and with New Year on the 25th of December (instead of the first of September). But the most surprising change is that Jesus Christ is now said to have been born in the year 8 (instead of the year one, as in Bede’s chronology).
